KEN JOCHEM PLACES 3RD IN NATIONAL WELDING CONTEST
The winners of the 52nd Annual SkillsUSA Championships in WELDING were announced June 24, 2016, at the Awards Ceremony of the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference. The Conference was held June 20 - June 24, 2016, at Freedom Hall and the Kentucky Exposition Center, Louisville, Kentucky. More than 15,000 students, teachers, education leaders, and representatives from 600 national corporations, trade associations, businesses and labor unions participated in the event.
Pike Central vocational welding student Ken Jochem placed 3rd, receiving a bronze medal in the welding contest. Ken is a 2016 Forest Park graduate participating in the Pike Central Vocational Welding program under the direction of welding instructor Kevin Carter through the Patoka Valley Vocational Cooperative. Ken is the 8th Pike Central welding student to place in the national contest in the last 16 years. For his accomplishment, Ken received Lincoln and Miller welding machines; a Pipe Pro calculator; Carhartt clothing valued at $100; one-year membership in the American Welding Society; and numerous tools of the trade. Ken also received several scholarships.
Competitors received contest drawings and a set of welding procedure specifications. All drawings, welding symbols, and welding terms conformed to the latest edition of the American Welding Society standards. Through a series of stations, contestants were tested on various aspects of welding: measuring weld replicas, using weld measuring gauges; laying out a plate and using oxy-acetylene equipment to cut several holes that are checked for accuracy and quality; Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) on steel making welds in various positions using short circuiting transfers; Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW) using a shielding gas, making welds in various positions and, using a combination machine capable of providing the correct welding current for shielded metal arc (SMAW) and gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW). Competitors completed the steel project and welded an aluminum project in various positions using a variety of filler metals.
Contestants were judged while assembling and welding the project. Certified welding inspectors judged the completed project. Inspection methods included visual techniques.
