School Lunch Changes for the Better!

Dear Pike County families,

This fall, all Pike County school cafeterias will be implementing new meal pattern guidelines for school lunch, ensuring that meals are healthy, well-balanced and provide students the nutrition they need to succeed at school.  School meals currently offer students milk, fruits and vegetables, proteins and grains, but now they must meet strict limits on saturated fat and portion size.  Starting in School Year 2015-2016, school lunches will meet additional standards requiring:

  • Age-appropriate calorie limits
  • Larger servings of vegetables and fruits (students must take at least one serving of produce)
  • A wider variety of vegetables, including dark green, red/orange vegetables and legumes
  • Fat-free or 1% milk (flavored milk must be fat-free)
  • More whole grains
  • And less sodium

Applying the new meal pattern guidelines to our menus will help provide your children a high quality, nutritious lunch. We’re always working to offer Pike County students healthier and delicious choices.   You and your children/child may have noticed that Pike County school cafeterias started working towards these new mandates last school year.

School meals are a great value and a huge convenience for busy families too! Breakfast is $1.50 a day, Elementary lunch is $2.15 per day and Middle-High lunch is $2.45 per day.  In the upcoming months, Pike County School cafeterias are using "My School Bucks" a new service where you will be able to view your child/children activity, account balance, and make deposits.  Please keep in mind that the charge guidelines for all cafeterias are as follows: there will not be any charging of ala-carte items.

Now is the perfect time to encourage your children to choose school lunch!  We look forward to welcoming your children to the cafeteria.  To find out more about Pike County healthy school meals visit www.pcsc.k12.in.us, and to get the facts about school meals visit www.TrayTalk.org .
